The Daily Express building might not be the most pleasant place in the world to be this morning...
Here's how the Daily Star website is covering the unprecedented front-page apologies to the McCanns right now:
And the Daily Express website? That won't load at all.

It looks like they're taking this new grovelling position very seriously. I've just looked at their other front-page story online ('SHANNON MUM IS QUIZZED AGAIN') - If you scroll down, there's a link to other stories marked
» MORE 'NEWS' HERE...
Not news, just 'news'. Presumably from the Star's 'writers'.
I also noticed that for the first time in months, the front page isn't graced by 'model' and 'non-racist' Danielle Lloyd.
It's simply unbelievable that the Star, having handed over thousands to the McCanns for implying they dunnit, is now doing the same to Shannon's parents. I guess they're hoping the Matthews family are too pikey to sue.
In the Guardian today Mark Lawson writes that the Express papers - and the media in general - should have been permitted to denigrate the McCanns until proven innocent (in effect). I don't believe Lawson thought this at all until some idiot 26 year old commissioning ed asked him to be controversial in order to excite a reaction from the paper's commenters - who obliged of course. Why can't more people just die prematurely?
I'm one of the team of hacks at Private Eye magazine, where I've worked on and off since 1997. I'm also an editorial lieutenant on Popbitch (not sure what it means: we made up the job titles in the pub). I've written for a number of other newspapers and magazines, been a co-presenter on LBC, a regular newspaper reviewer on Sky News and written a biography of the Victorian businessman and philanthropist William Lever. My first novel, Topped of the Pops, a comedy thriller, was to be published in May 2008, until the publishers went bust. From 1999-2002 I was deputy editor of The Big Issue.
